Default Looking for advice on stripping factory paint

Hey guys, new to the forum but Ive had a 2000 firebird for about 15 years now. Finally found someone in my area with a ws.6 hood but its pretty rough. I took it to my local body shop and we couldnt quite tell what we were dealing with, I was hoping someone with some experience dealing with our cars would know how many layers of paint there are. The whole thing needs sanding clear down, he recomended block sanding it, I more want to know if these hoods had a gel coat and how thick they are? The clear is basically burned off from sun damage and the base sands pretty easily, but then theres a VERY thick layer of a light grey material that I at first though was the gel coat, but if you look carefully in the pictures there seems to be another layer of base and clear below that? I hit part of it with a DA and it seems to sand pretty easy. Anyways let me know if this is pretty typical of factory paint or if im dealing with some kind of frankensteins monster lol thanks!

Hello,

Your choice: Aircraft paint stripper, chemical dipping of the entire car into a caustic chemical bath or a high pressure air and water mix media blast using some kind of sand. My El Camino and Catalina both got the media blast treatment - coal dust media for the EC, garnet for the Catalina. For $800.00, the guy brings his truck to your house or any location you choose and it all goes down to bare metal. Done in maybe 5-6 hours. They add some anti rust compound called "HoldTite 102" in the water which gives you a few days to get some epoxy primer back onto the metal before rust sets in.

Yes, you get some sand in a few places but a shop vac pulls it all out. No regrets here about media blasting.
