Default Estimated Cost?

For you guys that paint or have already paid someone to do this, what is the estimated cost to paint a car that is already prepped for painting? (i.e. sanded down, etc)?

Mine was $8,000 but that included prep, all jambs, a color change and stripes.

Prep is everything when it comes to a great paint job. We've (Family owned autobody of 30+ years) never painted something that someone else prepped. We can't guarantee the integrity of our paint if all we do is spray it. That just screams trouble because as soon as something happens (chips off, fish eyes, etc) we would be blamed. If you're going to go as far as prepping and body work, you might as well go the rest of the way and paint it yourself. I don't wanna sound like a dick, but it saves so much hassle and frustration for both the customer and the shop.

as the other guys said i would not touch a car that was already prepped. we actually had a girl come in the other day with a 3rd gen camaro. she said her boyfriend prepped it and all it needed was to be painted. then i look at the car, and it looked like it took the kid 10 minutes to go around the whole car with a red scotch-brite pad, lol. not saying your prep job is that bad by any means, but it doesnt really matter. bare minimum for a paint job id say would be 2500 at my shop. that would not include jams, underhood, etc., just the outside of the car. also, metallic colors, and reds tend to be a lot more expensive, so keep that in mind if thats the color your looking for.

A friend of the family owns a body shop and he PAINTED a corvette for a guy that did all the body work and prep work himself. All my friend did was spray the paint, wet sand, and buff the car. The body work was soo shitty and the car looked like the atlantic ocean. The owner of the car tried to blame the painter. PREP work is the key to a good job. Anyone can shoot paint, it takes a real body man to do the PREP

Amen to that. Honest to God, it takes little skill to shoot basecoats(pearls and kandys are an exception), a good deal more skill to shoot clearcoat really well. But it takes a tremendous amount of skill to prep and make the panels straight.

For just the out side. About 1/2 gal of base 1/2 gal of base maker/ reducer. 2 or 3 quarts of clear and activator and reducer for the clear.

That would roughly do 2 coats of base and 2 to 3 coats of clear.

That would increase the cost a little bit. You can spend 300 on some cheap paint or 1500 on the best ****.

The dupont clear on my car was about 400 for just the clear and hardner/reducer. Theres three parts to the clear.

The dodge ram with sun set pearl orange on it, was over $1000 for just the paint alone.

Rev-Illusion Color Shifting Special Effect Flake/Pearl is a dramatic color shifting material that sprays like a large pearl. The color changing effect changes at every angle that the color is viewed. Use as a mid-coat over any base color (the darker the base the more dramatic the effect). Just 2 ounces of Rev-illusion (RP) is enough material to make 1 gallon of mid-coat special effect color. This is the best value for color shift available anywhere.

So what am I missing to finish the paint if I use that product?
I need a base coat for one but what else?

or the kustom shop saphire diamond crystal pearl over a black base
