Default Quote sound correct?

I got a quote from a guy today for paint and body work on my car. I'm changing the color from green to Black and need a few dings and such fixed. He said for the materials, paint, about a gallon of clear (approx 3 coats), and to paint the door jams and trunk. Then wet sand and buff it. It would be about 1200$. That on top of me buying a new hood fender, and front bumper, I'm looking at about 2 grand. Damn lol...

I just got quoted $1800 for a quarter panel dent to be pulled and for my hood to be painted. You got an incredibly cheap deal there.

It's definately not too good to be true, there are planty of hacks that need money out there. Just don't give him **** for $$$ until it's done and you like it. Often guys need money badly like to pay last month's shop rent, they'll take a big deposit from you and then either not finish your car or screw it up and hand it back to you.

It cost me $1500 back in Nov 2002. Its been painted 3 times since for various things. First was Candy paint which isnt good for a daily driver. He knew it was a DD but neglected to tell me about the problems with candy paint. I learned quickly all about it after various chips and a scrape. He repainted the flames again in May 2003 in regular paint but left the candy on the tips of the flames since they are less prone to chips given where they are on the car. That cost me $1200. Now I had another incident later that year when I was driving down 1-95 and there was a big roof shingle in the road which I couldnt see ahead of me because of a car. The car in front of me drove over it which kicked it up in the air. I couldnt avoid it and it as it was falling it hit the front of the car damaging the front gfx and flexed the whole bumper. He repainted it again but the insurance company paid for it that time.

Each time he painted it there were quality issues....a drip of heavy paint in one area, dust in a couple places under the clear. Now as it stands his work is not holding up. There's clear coat chipping off the door trim moulding from when he repaired the door from someone keying it May 05. The pinstriping is pulling away from the flames, the paint is cracking in a couple areas within the flames. The painter that is working on the car now has told me why these things are happening and it all boils down to just laziness and perhaps not having the knowledge at the time of the proper techniques. First off he should've cleared each color as he went along doing the fades but he didnt which results in a somewhat muddy color and makes it hard to go back and do repairs. He also didnt prep the original bumper right nor put the proper flex agent in. He also didnt clear and prep the area where the pinstriping went.

Make sure you see the work this guy has done recently and from a while ago. I would never recommend my first painter and am trying to get something done about the hood. All the flames should be redone but it would cost me $3500-$4500 more now and I dont have the money. I wished I'd known what I know now.

Yep... I'd say nine times out of ten, when I hear someone talking about a screaming deal they got on a paint job, they are either unhappy with it, or you can tell they're intentionally not letting screwed up spots bother them because they know they're stuck with it and everyone warned them about it. It costs way more to fix a screwed up job then it does to do it right the first time.... but once in a while you get lucky and find someone giving away skilled labor for peanuts.
