Default Help Painting engine bay

Well , after getting some estimates by local body shops and "side" work guys,I think I am going to attempt to paint my engine bay myself. My car is pewter and no matter what i do in the engine bay it looks like crap because the bay looks like its primered.I will probably use a rattle can custom mix of my pewter from my local NAPA.My question is on the clear.I've done some small painting projects before and I know how easy it is to run clear.Any tips you guys can give me I would appreciate it.

If you use rattle can clear you shouldn't have any problems with runs. Hold 8-10 inches from surface and overlap strokes about 50% and you should be OK.

Is there a better brand of Clear in spray can or is it all the same?I think I always turn that 8-10" 's into 3" to 6".thats why ive gotten runs in the past.

Because Paint Out Of A Can Has A Lot Of Additives. You Will Never Get The Finish You Are Looking For. I Dont Care How Many Coats Of Clear You Use You Will Not Be Able To Buff It. I Would Spend The Money And Get It Dont Right.

OK. You do have a very valid point. And your probably right I wont be completly happy with the finished product. The only problem is i cant find anybody in my area that will do it,for one, and when they will the cheapest quote I got from somebody that I would actually let do it was $500.So I thought this might work for this show year.Sure would look better than the sealer thats in engine compartment now.

A complete pull out and repaint of the engine bay sounds like what it will take to achieve the level of finsih you are looking for. If you say the stock looks like crap then anything less than removing everything and painting with base clear will leave you with less than stellar results. But why waste the time unless it's show car or trailer queen. Then again I live in the country so it's pointless anyway.

Man if you have an air compressor you can buy a cheap mini gun on ebay or something and buy some basecoat black and a quart of clear and go to town.

If you spray paint it now, it will be a huge pain in the *** if you ever want to paint it with real paint. The urethane reducer in auto paint will react with the spray paint and lift, so it will have to be completely stripped.

I thought it over and I want it painted right. So I am either going to do it w/my mechanics small spray gun, which I hope i dont screw up,or Im just going to wait until i can afford to do it professionally.

Man, you will love spraying with a real spray gun. If you can half *** shoot with a rattle can then you can really go to town with a spray gun. I hope you have not attemted to spray it with a rattle can yet because the automotive paint will more than likely react. Set the gun at like 29 psi if its a hvlp (gravity fed) spray the first layer of clear light and then the next two medium you will have no runs that way. And the base coat is pretty hard to run because it almost dries on the spot. the only way it will run on you is if you stay in one spot too long. Good luck.

I am doing my engine bay as well while my heads are getting machined. I bought a decent touch up HVLP gun but drop the needle during cleaning it and bent it so I bought a VIPER set 3 guns for around 110 really cheap but it does a good job for what it is. I learned to get the paint mixed by your VIN I am redoing everything because I sprayed it with the wrong paint at first. I sprayed it pewter alternate 5 which mine was actually alternate 3 grrr.... But anyways I'm all done taping and will be ready to spray it again tonight. I'll try to take some pics of my earl shieb job and send them to you if you'd like an idea of how I'm doing it - send me an email mikeaford@gmail.com and I'll get some pics hopefully tomorrow of my progress. Painting seems scary but remember if you screw up the worst is you will be sanding a while to get rid of your boo boo's don't let it scare you the only way to learn it is to do it...
