Default Wetsand and Buffing..

I need a new paint job. Alot of scratches.. no dents but some deep and not soo deep scratches.

I was gonna gave the car painted but was estimated at 7500 for onyx black (same exact color the car is now!).

Two questions for you guys..

1)- Does wetsanding work really well? Any pictures of before and after?

2)- How much does a shop typically charge for this service? My car is a 2001 Camaro SS and the hood doesnt need to be done.. I have a new hood on the way (VFN Sunoco Baby!)

Thank you everyone!

wet sanding and buffing works wonders... as long as the scratches are not to deep ...down to primer...then you can always restore your paint. also, if the scratch does go really deep then just get the filler paint andthen wet sand and buff that.

wetsanding does work and it can make an average paint job look ten times better. However there are two things to consider. Generally the rule of thumb is if you can catch a fingernail in the scratch it can not be wetsanded and buffed out. Also being factory paint there isnt a whole lot of clear to work with so by the time it is finshed you wont have a whole lot of protection for your paint.

wet sanding out a scratch is only effective if the scratch is only in the clear.

Another thing to consider is the age of the paint on the car now. If the paint and clear are more then a few years old, then running a buffer over it could actually cause more damage to the finish. Especially where the car is black, its a bitch to buff perfectly. $7500 to paint the car is astronomical though, I'd look for a better body shop. The shop I work in could quite easily quote a price thats half that or possibly better if no major body work is required.

$7500 for a repaint of the same color, especially black the single cheapest color there is, is highway robbery. Look at getting a couple other quotes.

What's involved in replacing a roof panel? They look simple enough.
