Default Car keyyed, how to touchup?

Someone keyed my door about 3 inches long and then cut back about 2 inches. Car is sunset orange metallic so I know it is gonna be a pain to make look good.

I would like to try a touchup before having the whole door repainted.

About 1 inch is all the way through the paint, most of the rest of it is through the clear.

I am thinking about wetsanding it and buffing/glazing it first off to see if i can get rid of the white lines made from the scratched clear. Then I will try to get some SOM paint in a spray can or bottle and touch up the area that is through the paint. I will then follow up with a clear and once again, wetsand, buff, glaze. Am i missing any steps? Any other suggestions?

It has been my experience that spray-can clear yellows pretty quickly (uncatalyzed I guess?), as well as that if you attempt to fill the crack with the little brush in the touch-up bottles and wetsand the surface flat, then buff, the buffing will lift the touch-up paint.

There used to be a pretty good article in the Wiki for this, but the Wiki link up top seems to just redirect to the main forum page.

Unless you have access to a paint gun and feel comfortable shooting some base and reclearing the door, I think your best bet would to be to use a little thinner in the crack to soften up the surrounding paint, then use the finest tipped brush you can find to fill in the crack with touch-up paint until it is flush with the clear. You can buy some touch up paint from the dealer or Autozone or whatever; it won't be a perfect match, but it's better than nothing.

If you try to clear over it, chances are the rattle-can stuff will turn yellow and look worse than the scratch did in the first place.

is your insurance covering the charges? i would assume if they were you would have the whole door repainted. A little off topic, do you know who did it, or where it happened?

what i usually do for touchups like that is, i lightly wetsand and the clear down with some 2000(it will be easier to buff), and if you wanna get really into it get some 3000 to smooth the texture out and this will also get rid of rough edges. then you should have a good outline of your scratch. your gunna wanna take touch up paint( i reccommend having someone match the paint like a paint supply store or something) lay it heavy in the crack and if it gets on the exsisting paint i wouldnt worry about it. then wetstand with 2000 the touchpaint into the crack so its pretty flush(you might have to put a few coats). then buff the touch up paint into the exsisting paint(be careful so you dont burn your paint). then wet sand a little more with 2000 and put a coat or 2 of clear in there wetsand again and buff for final results. take your time with this method and be very carefull with the buffer and dont keep it in one spot to often.

Insurance deductable is like 500 and i dont want to waste it on just fixing a scratch. I think im gonna try a touchup and if that doesnt come out well, ill pay to have the door repainted. I am confident i can probably do a decent job. Ive done some very good repairs on black and grey cars.
