Default Free hand on top of paint.

Alright I am painting my intake and I want to put my initials on it. I thought of just getting a fine paint brush and try to free hand it. I know its a task but im eager to learn and want to give it a shot. Well when i put my paint down. Do i let that dry then put the initials on and then apply the clear coat? I am looking to do this tomorrow so a fast response would be appreciated.

yes do everything you plan on doing and then lay down your basecoat. let it flash off or let it dry completely. letting it dry completely will be the best way but by doing this you'll have to sand the basecoat with like some 1500 or 2000 to get the best adhesion before you clear coat that part. last clear it.

Are you using automotive paint? If so just let the base dry and then put your initials down with a brush, but dont use reducer with the basecoat you are going to use to paint your initials with. If you use reducer it will more than likely be too thin or you might even burn some of the basecoat off. I wouldnt sand it unless there were inperfections in the base. Then just clear.

or if you wanted to you could do it on top on the clearcoat so that if you dont like it you can wipe it off. just add a little bit of hardener to the basecoat color. like he said dont use reducer because it wont cover as good and its gunna be easiert o run

for a beginner, I'd clear it first, let it dry, sand it with 1500, and then pinstripe on top of that. If you mess up the pinstriping, you can wipe it off with thinner, and not destroy the paint below it. Then once you have it how you want, reclear it.

I do a lot of free hand pinstriping, i kinda got into it by accident. I did a few on some paper for fun and had it in my highschool art show. The next day, i had some people ask me to do a few Harley tanks for them, lol.

The key i just to keep a steady hand, and steady distance with you're hand from what you're painting on. If you keep it steady, and the brush the same distance away, the line will be the same width. You'll be fine with just a fine brush. I never had much luck trying to stripe with automotive paints. The paint most stripers use is called One-Shot. Its the right consitancy to lay an even line, comes in many colors, and it dries fairly fast. O and practice what you're doing first on an old plastic license plate, or something of about the same texture as the intake. If you want it centered, i'd measure it out too. I'd clear it first, and like Beyond Static said you could wipe it off with thinner if you mess up, then clear it again. Should be pretty cool when you're done!
