Theft code with security light on my own car?

Theft code with security light on my own car? My security light came on today with a theft code and the car still runs and drives fine just sometimes when i go to start it the key turns to start and everything dies it only does it now and then. I dunno where to start with the chip in the key or what just wondering if anyone has any suggestions or has had the same issue please share...Thank you
