Question OBD1 code scanning

I got me a cable, and would like to know what programs are available or have been used by any of you guys here.

I tried running a program that was installed on the CD that came with the cable (wOBD) and I tried to read codes, and all I got was some check ignition on code every all the time. Everytime that came up, it registered it as a code. But I got no log out of it.

I am also getting Tunercats soon, does it scan too? I tried installing FreeScan on my new laptop, and it won't even start up because of Vista being the crap that it is.

Tunercats does not have scanning capability. Freescan or Datamaster are for OBDI.
Does Vista have a compatibility mode that may work for older applications?

Normally I let brothers work things out, since they are related.
However, Datamaster has 20 free trial runs and claims it can be run on Vista. Just an fyi.
