Default '03 lq4 pcm

I am corresponding with a tuner recently. He is of the impression that my PCM has dual spark tables? Depending on whether one is running premium or regular fuel he feels that basically the PCM will try running on the high octain spark table first, if it detect spark knock, it will back down to the low octain table.

Not sure how it works exactly, but I think it tries to use the high octain table at each start up, then depending on if it sees an knock or not, will either stay with that table, or go lower.

Interesting concept, does it sound correct?
Thanks for any input,
Frank

sounds right to me. there are protocols to it resuming to the high timing table as well. maybe someone in the know will chime in.
