Default How to replace ignition switch?

I have an issue with my 99 TA where once in a while you go to start the car and the security light turns on and the car wont start. You wait until the light goes out, about 5 min. and it will start. For a while I thought it was the starter relay, as when this would happen, I would carry a spare relay, put it in and the car would start. But the relay was taken apart last time this happened, and it was fine. I had a mechanic hook up a meter and when this happened, the readings comming from the ignition was all over the place. Tested the key resistor, and it read fine. I guess the little wires inside the ignition switch are frayed or worn inside. So how do you replace it? Also what saftey measures to take with the air bag since you have to mess around with that area?

This seems to be a common issue lately. I've had it happen a few times and am debating on how I want to do the fix. Not sure if I want to tear into it or just do the resistor fix.

Either way, this is not my info and was taken from a kind local (CatSkynr) who posted it on a local F-body board.

Hope it helps:

Remove the steering wheel from the steering column.
Insert the ignition key into the lock cylinder. Leave the key in the LOCK position.

Remove the lock retaining screw (2).
Remove the lock cylinder (1) and harness (4), perform the following:
4.1. Disconnect the terminal connector from the bulkhead connector.
4.2. Remove the wiring protector.
4.3. Disconnect the retaining clip (3) from the lock housing cover sleeve.
4.4. Pull the wire harness (4) through the steering column.
4.5. Remove the lock cylinder (1) from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

Install the lock cylinder (1) and harness (4), perform the following:
1.1. Install the lock cylinder (1) to the vehicle.
1.2. Pull the wire harness (4) through the steering column.
1.3. Connect the retaining clip (3) to the lock housing cover sleeve.
1.4. Install the wiring protector.
1.5. Connect the terminal connector to the bulkhead connector.

Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

Install the lock retaining screw (2).
Tighten the lock retaining screw to 2.5 Nm (22 inch lbs.) .

Remove the ignition key from the lock cylinder.
Install the steering wheel to the steering column.

****one side bar, i read tying a string to the harness as you pull it up will add in threading it back through during install****

Look up the VATS bypass if you don't want a dealer key or have issues.
