Default Here we go, P0418 code.

Hey guys so I was teaching my fiancé to drive stick this weekend (which actually went better than I expected) and long story short I got a SES light with a P0418 code, Secondary Air Injector system fault. The autozone probable cause says:
1. Circuit relay defective or fuse open.
2. check connector and wiring
3. Air Pump defective or hoses blocked

So basically what is my course of action? Replace the relay? Then work my way up? And since I've never really worked on the AIR pump system where is it located and what does it look like, aside from replacing the relay (which I can figure out) how do I perform the last 2 actions.

Also I planned on driving my car up to Cleveland this weekend (I live in Dayton) to have my rear end worked on, will this cause a problem with the trip? Will it force my car into a limp home mode? Or will I be ok? Any information or input will be helpful.

I just got through removing the AIR pump on my car. Basically, its behind the headlight, there is a sticky for removing it in the external engine section which would help you figure out where it is.

Since you didn't say what car you have I guessed 2000 F car.

Wow totally forgot, rookie mistake, 1999 z28 m6. Anyways I replaced the relay and disconnected the battery for several minutes and the SES is still on. Whats my next step try to "clean" the AIR tubes?

Did you check the fuse?
Did you check for voltage to the relay?
Did you check the grounds?
Did you look for damaged or corroded pins in the terminals?
Did you check power to the air pump with the relay grounded?

There is a lot to diagnosing electrical problems and DTC's, that's why technicians make big money if they are good.

OK I will work on that this weekend, couple of questions. Can I just use a multimeter or do I need a scan tool to do these tests. Also can you give me a quick procedure for checking the voltage to the relay and power to the air pump with the relay grounded? When I pulled the relay to replace it all the contacts were like new and all the other fuses and relays in the box looked in good condition.

Yes you can use a multimeter, a scan tool that can command the relay would be the best way but if you can read a schematic and use a multimeter you should be fine.
