can we activate DoD when we want?

can we activate DoD when we want? just asking if it's possible to run on 4 cylinders everytime then switch to 8 when we want to play.....
I know how the system works but maybe we can trick the pcm to keep 4 cylinders running in the city by exemple....
discuss!!

the DOD activation is driven by a lot of parameters/scenarios...
certain rpm's, certain throttle positions, certain vacuum pressures, what gear you're in, vehicle speed, pressures, etc etc...
