Default 383 LT1 Tuning Problems

I've got a 95 z28 with a built 383 stroker. I've already sent my PCM off to be flashed for the motor. I got it back and it runs, but it's rich as hell and the timing is off. I've got a couple friends with tuning software like hptuners, but those only work for OBDII computers and I've got OBDI. I was looking at TunerCat's OBDI LT1 Pro Tuning Kit so I can just do it myself, but I don't know anything about them. What do ya'll think I should do?

We use it on a lot of the older stuff, and it works great. Customer service is great but no-one is going to tell you how to tune it over the phone though. You will have to do a lot of reading and try it yourself. Not a lot of people like tuning the older LT1s.

If you have any mechanical issues with the car it can compound the learning curve very quick.

I realized that nobody likes tuning the older LT1s too... Do you know how user friendly the interface is? And will I be able to program more than 1 pcm with it?

I use TC alot. I'm one of the only guys left that will still tune LT1s and the older chip cars. If you end up getting TC, send me an email. I'll help you out tuning it for a fee. Can't do it for free, this is how I make my living.

Email addy in sig.

Oh, I understand that. I'll make sure to send you an email. Will I be able keep it plugged up while I'm driving so I can tune it more accurately?

it does exactly what you tell it to do lol you just have to know what your trying to tell it... and it's very easy to mess something up. Whatever you do make sure and save a stock tune to always go back to if you've went to far...

Yea, I think that's going to be the fun part... Trying to figure out exactly how to tell it what I want it to do. I'm gonna save the original in a couple places, can't lose that...

You will need another program to log data. I use datamaster on LT1's. You'll also want a wideband to dial in the A/F if you don't have one. Tunercat used to be open to tune as many as you want but I don't know if its still that way.

Get TC, its very affordable. TC for the OBD1 is still able to tune as many cars as you want afaik. I converted my 97 to OBD1.
As stated whatever you do, save all your tunes when you make changes. That way you can always re-flash with a prior tune if you dont like the changes you made.
Basically all you have access to with the software are look up tables. I havn't used any OBD2 stuff but it's most likely the same deal so have your experienced friends help you out as well.
I data log with freescan, it's free.

OBD1 is still tune as many as you want. Only OBD2 changed back when JET bought the rights.

Which ever one you choose make sure it has an rpm reference unless you are gonna wire it up to feed into the LT1 pcm so that it will show in the same log as your data. Without rpm reference you will not know what area needs adjustment.

How can I tell which ones have a rpm reference? I haven't seen any that advertise that...

None of the cheap ones do. If you are going to wire it through datamaster then you don't need it. I use the Zeitronix zt2 which does have rpm and can add boost, fuel pressure etc with extra senders.

So if I get the TC pro and then wire a cheap one up, I'll be fine... If I don't want to get TC then I need to get one of the expensive widebands that comes with it's own control box...

You can get a very nice WB for a couple of hundred, thats the only way to tune WOT, so you will need it.

You need to get Tunercat to be able to make changes in the pcm. You need Datamaster to be able to log the data in the pcm and input the wideband A/F reading for logging. Then you need the cable to be able to connect the car to the laptop.
