All cables are not the same, there are no free programs or trial versions because you need their cable.

Why wouldnt a cable with a odb II connector and a parallel port on the other end not work??? How is the cable locked to the software exactly?? Seems logical to me that all the program needs is the data read from the PCM...

when buying a program like edit/ hp tuner, atap, efi your paying for the cable not the software. the software will only work with its appropriate cable.

you didnt think you could get off that easys did you

Check out scantool.net if you're looking for free software to experiment with. $85 or so gets you their cable and RS-232 translator box, the software and source code are freely downloadable.

Because they dont just wire some pins together and convert some voltages. The cable has a controller chip and a specially designed VPW encoder to talk on the bus.

Each manufacturer implements this differently.
