Unable to get VIN out of PCM?

Unable to get VIN out of PCM? Has this ever happened to anyone on a ls1 car where you cannot get the VIN number out with a scan tool (I tried two different ones). Is the GM tech II (Dealer tool) the only thing that can pull them out? I don't have tuning software but the dealer in town can try it for 50 bucks... input please please.
