Default I am overwhelmed...

So I have been reading through several threads and other Internet sources. I am overwhelmed...
Now here is what I mean...

I want to be able to tune myself---so I want to learn how to tune
Idealy, I want to be able to hook my laptop up and be able to tune on the go.
I want a program that I can have tunes preset

What program do You think I should use?
Should I throw out the laptop idea and go handheld?
What's the best way to learn how to tune? Books? Schooling???

With my upcoming mods of procharger or rear end and such... TuniNg myself would probably save me money...

Learning to tune on a forced induction car is dangerous IMO. If you want to start learning, I'd register over at the EFI Live and HPTuners forums....and start reading. There are stickies with tons of info. I know the EFI folks have the software where you can download it along with a few stock tunes to play around with. But, if you really want some solid advice, I'd suggest NOT learning on a f.i. car. The bill for what could happen to your engine would likely be much bigger than what a tuner would charge you to do it right.

Like SSpdDmon said, you need to get on the HPTuners and EFI Live forums. You can DL both programs for free and mess with tunes. You just won't be able to program anything. I also STRONGLY suggest you stay away from tuning FI until you have NA down. In all honestly, WOT and cruising are quite easy to tune. It's all the little drivability things that get you. And those are the ones that will make you love or hate the car. You MUST read a lot if you want to tune your car and not turn it into a 3500+lb paper weight.

I'm in pretty much the same boat you are. About to dive head first in to this stuff. I went with hptuners myself. Was mulling around their forums for a long time a while back. There was a ton of helpful stuff over there. Guess i need to go back, don't think any of the info i read stuck.
