Anyone know why you would be able to flash a vcm with hpt without a key in the ignition.

happened today on a 2010 camaro. i accidentally hit begin before i noticed i hadnt put it in and it started writing. when i realized what was happening i thought "OH CRAP" but it wrote and fired up.

anyone know why this would happen and are there any potential underlying effects

I've done the same on the bench with e38's...not sure why it works though.
