question on using someone elses flash?

question on using someone elses flash? I read somewhere (edit manual I think)and can't find it now that if you use another cars flash then the builds have to be the same. On 99+ does this mean all 8 segment ID's have to be the same? What about on 98's? There's the calibration # then under that there's 4 other numbers, do those have to match as well or just the calibration #??
