Default 98 PCM vs 99 PCM

Now I know this has been covered before, but I'm looking for more than 2 answers. I already know about the faster processor and real time tuning. What other differences are there to justify this swap. I hear that the more serious of a build the 99 is better but why? Can someone elaborate on the benefit of the faster processor?

The only reason to really change to a 99+ (0411) pcm is if you plan to use a 3 bar map sensor and go 14+ psi

Most tuners like the 2002 f body OS because it gets rid of all the backup ve tables.. And if you go custom OS later then I hear the 01-02 are superior..

What are the plans on your car?

It's a 370 trick flow heads 200 shot ect....not planning on FI with the motor. I just pulled out my ProEFI standalone because it was way overkill for what I'm doing. I got my hands on a 99 PCM so I thought if it was worth it is switch. Mines a 98C5

Eh you'll have to jump through a few hoops like reppining the 98 harness to match to the 99+ pcm.. And the gas tank will read full always, I think hptuners does a segment swap for that though..

A 98 pcm can handle a head/cam build easily, just find a good tuner locally.. That's the hardest part!

the 98 pcm's are also very finicky about voltage during writing much moreso than the newer 99+ pcm's.

Additionally they are a single segment binary and do not report the os id so its much easier to fry one of these pcms due to user error read as "oopsies I think I just flashed the wrong file to the pcm" its not horribly common but because there are less checks with those pcms it makes it easier to fry one.

Also because they were only used for 2 years they are less common than the newer pcm's.

Not to mention they have less tables(I think roughly 100 less editable tables) than the newer pcm's and the tables that are there have less resolution.

Also because they are a single segment binary segment swaps cannot be done on them making swapping to a 4l80e much more difficult.

Hope this helps
