Default When to switch to a aftermarket ECU?

1999 Trans am
427 Dart lsnext
GT55 turbo
E85
4L80E
ams500 boost controller

Presently running mid 9's on low boost, the plan is to be running mid 8's next year. Presently on the stock pcm. How do you decide the time is right to make the switch to a aftermarket ECU? Interested in the Holley set up.

When OEM ECU doesn't have the capabilites to do what you need

If stock ecu is not limiting you, don't change it.

With the injectors available now (ID1300/2000)...there's a LOT LESS need for an aftermarket computer.

I don't see many limitations with the stock PCM in a 99+ car, and in a 98 it's a pin swap to go to a 99+ computer.

The only really big thing to consider...SOME aftermarket computers use a wideband 100% of the time...so they can help you in a fuel system failure (say you lose pressure), IF you have injectors that are way oversized and able to deliver enough fuel with a major loss of pressure...

Yep, I think the biggest plus for me is the fail safes you can program in.
