Default Can any VIN number be programmend into the ECU?

I'm about to finally get going on my 94 3.4 V6 to 99/00 LS1 swap. One question that I've been pndering for some time is the VIN number in the computer. Using LS1Edit (or something similar) can I program my cars real VIN into the computer? Is it just a dumb "label" or does the computer check the 8th digit, indicating engine type for any useful purpose?

Sorry for the newb question,

Thanks in advance

I am not sure if this helps but a friend of mine used my SS VIN GM put it into his Z28 computer and it recognized it as my car. The GM guy said you could do it with a 98 LS1 into a 97 LT1. I know sometimes they just think they know what they are talking about but maybe its possible not that i would know.

just a dumb label... you may run into more probs than its worth changing the VIN for a V8 PCM to a V6 VIN ... any PCM Editing software that reads the VIN to determine the type of car will be fubarred...

Best to leave it w/an appropriate vin (if it's a 99 Operating system for an LS1 then use a 99 LS1 VIN) .. you can get these off of ebay

Thanks much guys. I'm a Cali Camaro owner so, I'm debating whether or not to legally make the change which is why I asked. I just had to smog my car at a "test only" site which hooks up the computer to Sacramento for the test. I may be moving out of state soon (possibly to Colorado) so hopefully smog requirements wont be as harsh.
