lsx Ignition Control problem

lsx Ignition Control problem I have a 525 circle track crate motor that uses an LSX Ignition Controller and I can't get the program installed. I have the following questions:
1. The directions say to download the software into a pc but it doesn't say which program to use...windows 7,8 or even xp, which one? I purchased a new computer just for this program using windows 7 (the guy at Bust Buy says he looked up the program requirements from the gm website). The program loads but when I open it up it opens to the middle of the program with the graphs.
2. I get an error message that "no com port is available..." The lap top and the control box are not speaking to one another. The control unit comes with a usb cable, new computers do not have usb ports so I purchased a usb to serial adapter (again the best guy sales person). I took the computer back to the store to find out what was happening and the guy at the Geek station says the adapter will not work that information will not go back and forth.
3. I tried calling and emailing MSD the maker of the box but neither one of the techs believed that MSD made the part(it has a GM part number) and they
couldn't help.
4. The GM help number girl was only able to give me the name of the nearest GM dealer
Has anyone programed this unit, I need advice
