1992 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Problem

Default 1992 GMC Sierra Ignition Switch Problem

Hi All,

This is not a tuning related questions but, I didnt know where to put this.

I have a 1992 GMC Sierra and this morning I went to start the truck and the key went to the start position where all the lights come on but, the switch would not turn into the run position to activate the starter. It was locked. I put the truck in neutral and let it roll a little then put it back into park and tried again, no luck. I have never heard or seen this before.

Can someone point me in the right direction for fixing this? Thanks

Can you turn the key while it is in neutral? Could be a bad ignition.

I was able to look at it for about 10 minutes after work. I can jiggle the key a certain way and the key will get passed the stuck part allowing the truck to start. I am 99% sure it needs a new key ignition switch.

The ignition actuator rack inside the column broke. You gotta tear down the column to replace it. It's easy for a pro a real pita if you haven't ever done one before and there are a few special tools involved. If your lock cylinder is wore out replace it while you are in there. Since the column is tore down that far there are some torx bolts in the very bottom that you need to pull out one at a time and red loctite them then reinstall. If the tilt wheel is sloppy or has excess play the bolts and loctite will fix that also.

Ignition switches never give trouble on those trucks.

Probably about 75.00-100.00 worth of parts from a dealer. You can get the rack for cheaper at parts house but they are cheap chinese crap and will fail in 6-8 months because it is made out of potmetal and you will be back at square one.

Maybe your key is just worn to much? Do you have a spare key to try?
