Angry Cam sensor issues

  • I'm beating my head against the wall I have a 98LS1 out of a transam with a 99 computer and harness out of a Camaro that's been modified by shop. putting it Into a 2001 Jeep TJ I'm getting an 0342 code for the Cam sensor and an 0200 code for the injector. no tack hard starts. is there a difference between the Cam sensors for those 2 years or pin out on haress?

No they should be the same sensor 24 tooth. The injectors work off the cam sensor. Have u swapped sensor? They say bwd brand are not the best to use

Turned it that the harness from lsx unlimited in Alvarado, had multiple sensor wires in it cut. The cam sensor was one. I ended up having to tear apart the harness and re build it my self. They insisted it wasn’t the harness. Won’t be going back...

IIRC the crank sensor actually kicks the injectors. Maybe it's different on a 98

Yes the crank sensor is what fires the injectors and the spark. I messed up on my harness and had a wire pinned wrong on my cam sensor, which threw the same code, but I also had a bad "out of the box" crank sensor too. When troubleshooting I used a noid to verify the injectors worked, and they did. Eventually got the car started after replaceing the crank sensor, with it still throwing the code for the cam sensor. I traced the wires and saw I had them switched at the PCM for some reason... lol. Ooops. Moral of the story is the cam sensor apparently isn't needed to run the engine. And this was also on a 98 btw.

Yup, it ran. Just hard to start, no tach signal and ran like crap

I believe this is from GM.

"Observe that as long as the PCM receives the Crankshaft Position sensor 24X signal, the engine will start. The PCM can determine top dead center for all cylinders by using the Crankshaft Position sensor 24X signal alone. The Camshaft Position sensor 1X signal is used by the PCM to determine if the cylinder at top dead center is on the firing stroke, or the exhaust stroke. The system attempts synchronization and looks for an increase in engine speed indicating the engine started. If the PCM does not detect an increase in engine speed, the PCM assumes it incorrectly synchronized to the exhaust stroke and re-synchronizes to the opposite cam position. A slightly longer cranking time may be a symptom of this condition."

So basically if the PCM doesn't see an increase in RPM when you are trying to start it, the PCM will change the injector timing 180 degrees.
