Default Jet DST Licensing questions:

I have some questions about the Jet Performance DST 14005 programmer for those on this forum that use this tool. I understand this is the technology that TunerCat’s licensed to Jet Performance.

The Jet Performance DST 14005 kit says it comes with 4 licenses. What does that mean exactly? Is the license tied to the original VIN on the PCM? Or is it somehow tied to the physical PCM itself through a unique identifier that the PCM reports back to the DST? And when is the license actually used? During the first connection to the PCM, or when you read or write to the PCM?

So here are some examples that would help me understand more how this licensing works:

Example 1: I have a 0411 PCM from a V6 car that that has a V6 bin stored on it's flash. I want to use this PCM to replace a bad 0411 PCM for a V8 engine (I have a backup of the bin file from the V8 PCM). Do I need to use a license to initially connect to the V6 PCM, and then a second license to write over the original V6 bin with the V8 bin?

Example 2: I want to change engines in a project and use the same PCM (VIN doesn’t change). Because the tune will be very different, does the DST want to use a second license because it somehow thinks I’m working on a completely different project? (something tells me the DST isn’t that smart...)

Example 3: This last example is very similar to the first one. I have two P59 12586243 PCM’s and I want to make each one identical (have a clone as a backup unit). Do I need to use a second license to make a clone of the first PCM for a backup even though the bin files are identical?

I hope my questions made sense. Sorry if any or all of this sounds silly. I’m still learning this stuff.

Thanks in advance for any ideas and thoughts on this.

David

I can tell you the license does not report back to DST.

As far as I know with any commercial tuning software the only way to truly "clone" a PCM is to have the chip's image cloned to make an exact duplicate. This would be the only way to not cost software license credits with any software.

Once the PCM is licensed, You can make all the changes you want. I have never tried to change the OS with Jet software so I don't know how to answer that.

You will need to license each PCM used regardless of the file. Unless you make an exact clone.

If you need more licenses in the future, you can purchase more.

Thanks! This helps. I have a question sent to the tech support for the Jet DST. It will be interesting to hear what they say too.

I don't have a ton of experience but I needed one for a B Body to correct the speedometer. I only poked around a little bit.

I purchased mine directly at JET so I was able to ask some of my own questions in person.

Thanks again for the reply.

Please understand, I'm not trying to bypass a license on one of these tools. I believe that people should be paid for their work. I'm just trying to understand how it all works.
