Default HPTuners or ????

In the process of swapping over from T56 to 4l80, would you suggest other options vs buying the handheld device and getting a custom tune? Looks like the HP Tuners device will cost me 400 with credits, plus another 700-800 for tune to include trans startup, na tune and nitrous tune. Has anyone recently gone the Holley Terminator X or other route with good success without being a "tuner"

A handheld isnt going to work for what you what you need. Your only options are HPT or going Holley. If you go holley it is still going to require it to be tuned. You just have to decide if your going to spend the time to learn Holley (easier to learn than HPT IMO) if not your still paying for tuning. Holley would a lot easier since it can control your nitrous without any additional controllers like a stock pcm would require. However if going to a factor vehicle holley is not plug and play especially if you want your stock gauges to work.

wasn’t thinking handheld, was going to buy the hptuners device to get the ECM updated remotely so I can get the car drivable to check for any adjustments/leaks etc that need to be adjusted before taking to the tuner for a full tune or go with Holley or something similar, looking at it they market how easy tuning is with the terminator x, I don’t mind putting in a little time to learn the system if it give me some flexibility. My biggest concern is my tuner is 2 hours away and does frequent our track so as I increase n20 I would want to make adjustments. The gauges wouldn’t bother me as long as I could have a clean install. Just curious if anyone has went through the learning curve and was it as easy as advertised. I also don’t want to blow up a 10k engine.

Holley is easier than hpt to learn due to it doesnt have hundreds of tables you'll never use. Hpt and holley can both be remote tuned the same. On nitrous tuning however depending how much your trying to spray your going to have pull spark plugs to check your timing on nitrous, cant just go off a data log.

I'd go with HP Tuners to keep the factory gauges.

A good remote tune with a wideband should be no problem for a two hour drive to get the dyno tune. A LNC-2000 controller will allow you to have an optimal NA tune... along with the controller pulling timing for a N2o tune when the spray is armed.

As you go up in spray you can pull more spark via the controller then verify the tune with the wideband and plug readings. If you can install the LNC before the dyno tune, your tuner should be able to set the controller up for whatever shot you're spraying. This is much better than flashing a dedicated N2o tune when spraying and flashing back to a N/A tune when not.

You can now go with Holley and keep factory gauge cluster functionality.
