scan tool hey i’m trying to get a scan tool that i can read codes with and reset codes for a 2001 trans am and my question is do i need a gm specific scan tool or will just some scan tool from the parts store work thank you.

No, you do not need a GM specific scan tool to read and clear your OBD II codes. I believe, but don't quote me, that the regulations requiring an OBD port in automobiles prohibited model specific tools because most of the codes can be related to pollution issues that the EPA would like fixed. I don't have time to verify that though.
There are so many different kinds and levels of diagnostics that recommending one is difficult. I have an Innova 3100 ABS tool that I have had for a couple years that does what I need and cost under $100. Now if I was going to buy another one there are Bluetooth kinds where you plug a little module into the OBD port and it links to your smart phone and will give you information in real time while the car is being driven and can be even cheaper. A lot of these tools are pretty cheap so unless you are in a big hurry do some research and shopping. You can spend a couple thousand dollars for the tool if you really think you need that level of information, probably not unless car repair in your garage is a business, or one that covers everything you really just need for basics for forty dollars.
The guys at AutoZone or your local car parts store who will read and clear your codes for you are probably using a $40 tool. And that will cover everything you need.

I got a Thinkdiag. I know it's a stupid name. It gives me more info than I know what to do with. Combines Graphs and Records real time. Only thing is the UI is a little frustrating. You can pay for specific functions if you think you need them but it does standard OBD II function out of the box. It's nice to know you can expand it's functions in the future without paying up front for something you may never use.
