Default Why tune the VE before the MAF?

Why is it recommended to tune the VE before the MAF?

Like In a swap where the air intake is stock. The MAF shouldn't change once you get it right correct?
Specifically a gen 3 with a 411 PCM.

I have math setup to build a VE table from MAF data. Works well if you filter out the transients and cells with minimal data.

Well, technically, you can tune the MAF first, and lots of guys do. I always tune the VE first. I personally think it gets you a little better result on the MAF, because then the correction is basically nothing anyway.
On my own personal stuff, it's all SD. I don't even run a MAF.

That's just how they teach you to tune that way in the event the MAF fails the ECU still has good data to fall back on and the engine will run ok in SD. Otherwise, everything else trails the MAF above the point where dynamic airflow is disabled.

on NA cars (and I dont do a whole lot of them) where i run them MAF only, I still fill in the VE first. #1 If you have a bad maf the car will still run #2 if it's an automatic, especially a six speed auto, the car needs the tq values the VE table predicts to pull timing on the shifts, even if you have the VE "disabled" for a maf-only tune. without TQ management those 6l80e's die in short order.

Either way gives the same end result. You can datalog a base point for the VE tables using MAF flow. With the MAF failed you can also datalog a base point for the MAF table by datalogging Dynamic airflow vs MAF frequency. I tune my MAF first, datalog a starting point for the VEs. Then fine tune the VE table. Saves time and energy for me to let the scanner and histograms do the math.

The correct answer is because VE influences your fueling even if you have it set to be "MAF only".
