Mass Air Flow sensor replace?

Mass Air Flow sensor replace? Just a general question at the moment. Without going into too much detail just yet (simply because I'm too lazy to type it all out)...
With the car running (idle), removing the wire harness from the MAF should do what? Will the car continue to run? Stall out?
Oh, it's a 2001 TA. Bunch of bolt on goodies. Trying to trouble shoot a rough idle, stalling, backfiring issue. Currently the MAF is a SLP (P/N 23062). Trying to figure out if this is my issue.
