Default dumb question on tuning with undersized injectors

Hi everyone,
I have an LQ9 w/ 243 heads and a elgin ss2 cam in my 02 trans am with an LS1 top end (LS6 intake, LS1 28# injectors).
Also just picked up 42# Ford green tops because I have read enough to know the 28# won't be enough for this setup.

I'm just starting to get into tuning (only have base LS1 tune) and am wondering if it's even worth it to tune the current setup to get a baseline before swapping the new injectors in, or if the injectors cause that much change that it's not even worthwhile.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
thanks
Jim

A rule of thumb learned from Richard Holdener is that you multiply the single injector flow rate by 20 for a V8 to get the HP capacity of the full set.
If you're going for more than about 550 HP you need the larger injectors.

Tuning up to the limit of your stock injectors is a great idea, as long as you adhere to never going above whatever rpm/load they max out at. This will allow you to learn the intricacies of tuning for the aftermarket cam without any questions about whether or not you have proper injector data in your tune. Once you put in the larger injectors, as long as you have correct data for them (NOT JUST FLOW RATE), you should only be left with your high rpm/load areas left to tune.

gametech, that's exactly what i was looking for, thank you.
Wanted to make sure i wasn't going to break anything (was pretty sure since i'm not pushing RPMs) or wasting time completely (like redoing everything when I dump in the new injectors. I know i have to put in new injector data and probably repeat MAF and VE tuning, but i'm sure it'll be easier once i do it this time.

I'm not even getting close to 5k rpms right now. Still doing idle and base VE tuning and histogram setups (i don't have a wideband.... yet) when i get 20 minutes here and there.

Appreciate the feedback
Jim

Just remember that in a theoretical perfect world, the new injectors with proper data would NOT require any retuning. However, in the real world there is a strong likelihood that you will have some minimal retuning to do. If it goes beyond small changes, then something is off with the injectors vs the data you have.

I'm with game on this one. Tune it with the stock injectors. On my LS1, I had ported heads, LS6 intake, cam and full exhaust with the 28.8lbs and a 255lph pump and the injector duty cycle was low 90's at 7,000rpm.
