Here is help for new tuners If you are new to the PCM tuning arena, and want a real understanding of what all of this stuff means, some help has arrived.
There is a book out called, Corvette Fuel Injection and Electronic Engine Management. As most of the F-Body and Y Body people have one of these engines, this applies.

This is considered the ECM bible if you will in regards to how and why, and explains in great detail everything in the engine regarding computer management. It does not tell which values to put into which table, but he does explain why and how it all works from each sensor, to A/F ratios, Long and Short Fuel Trims and V/E tables and diagnostics. This book covers computer management for the L83, L98, LT1, LT4, LS1, LS6 and ZR1 1982-2001 ODB1 and ODB2.
I have found this to be very educational. The Author died recently but he was considered the expert in this field. It is worth reading especially if it is in the GM Library.

im definitely going to stop by barnes and noble tomorrow to see if they have it in stock. does it only explain how all the different sensors & the pcm work, or does it also help with modifying the pcm's tune (making general changes and things like that)?

It doesn't really have anything about tuning with edit or hptuners. It does explain how the pcm uses strims, ltrims, speed density, closed loop, etc., which you'll need to understand before you start trying to tune anyway.
