Default service engine soon light

Just a bad week for my cars, it just sucks. Last night I'm driving back to my dorm and the timing belt on the daily driver breaks. Hopefully I get lucky and there is no major damage other than a broken belt. Today I'm driving to work and my service engine soon light comes on in my Z28. What are some possible conditions that would make the light come on? I've already checked the o2 connections and they are good. Any help would be great so I can if at all possible avoid taking my car to the dealer.

You need to hook your car up to a scanner and tell us what the code is. Some of the parts stores will scan it for free if you don't have a scanner.

Ok thanks. That's what I was thinking. I'll see if I can get that done when I leave work.
