Default Newbie Tuning question

I currently have a Hypertech HPPIII. (don't laugh, it works) If I step UP to HPtuners, can I copy my Hypertech tune right off of my PCM and use that as a starting point? I know people say to copy your stock tune, and I would do that as well, but can I copy the HPPIII tune and still be able to return the truck to stock, sell the Hypertech, and then re-install the tune off of my laptop? Thanks.

I would return it to stock before you use the new tuner.
First thing you do is upload the stock file from your PCM and make a backup of it on your laptop, or a disc.
If you skip this step, the hypertech may not ever be able to restore your stock file.

I would just make notes of what you changed with the hypertech. It will be MUCH easier to duplicate those changes on your laptop with the new tuner.
Chances are you'll get a much better tune later on than you've got now, because your experience will grow.

What I did was copy my PCM with the HPP3 program installed. Save that file. Then return your PCM back to stock using the HPP3- so you can sell it. Then copy your PCM- this would be the stock version. I compared both files so I could tell what HPP3 changed. Some things I used- like shift firmness but timing I kept stock. You also might want to look at FlashScan. That is what I have. I really like it.

I would say, when you get HPT, read the HPP3 program and save it on your laptop. Then return the HPP3 back to stock and read that program from you VCM and save it. Sell that HPP3 and then start playing with the HPP3 program and upload your changes.

Which one would be better for me....flashscan or HPtuners? I'm sure it gets to be a personal preference kinda thing, but what are some pro's and cons? The HPtuners seems to have a larger group of users, so I would think I could get more assistance and support with it. What do you guys think?? Thanks.

With HPTuners, you can get two year/models for the same price. You are also not locked to any one VIN/car ... you will be able to tune every 2000 Silverado/Sierra that was produced by GM without restriction. I have the '98 and '01 F-body package as well as the '99 Silverado/Sierra package ... which allows me to tune every vehicle that I purchased support for. EFILive still restricts you to only tuning the vehicle (VIN) you purchased it for, no others. Both have good scanners, but I prefer the HPTuners scanner for use with the Editor. Makes tuning a lot simpler.
