Why turn VATS off?
They are usually having trouble with the key lock cylinder causing starting or running problems and do not want to incur the expense of replacing it. Cheap way out is to just turn off VATS.

i turned mine off cause the last thing I need is the car to not start because the resistor in the key is corroded/dirty or the wire on the cylinder lock break... It's not like VATs is that big of a deterrent anyways..
If you put in a pcm from another vehicle or replacement pcm, it allows the user to just plug it in and go. Without having to go thru a vats relearn proceedure which takes about 40 minutes, or about 15 minutes with a tech 2.
My car 2000 Z28, !VATs the security light is on and I am not paying GM $500 to replace the cylinder, and damn sure dont need to be stuck some where.
My friends car 2002 35thSSLE, !VATs because his would crank and fail to start, no security light, totally opposite of mine.
Good enough reason for me.
