Default Symptoms of an erratic Crank Position Sensor?

What would some of the symptoms of an erratically function crank position sensor, specifically in terms of cold and hot starts only?

Is it possible for the CPS not to function properly on cold/hot starts up to a certian TPS% and then be totally fine thereafter, regardless of idle speed, etc?

From what I've seen, you would get the CPS code (don't recall it off the top of my head) and quite a few additional misfires.

Can anyone else add to the symptoms?

One guy's problem:

A4 Z28, cam, bolt-ons - Car would idle perfect, no misfires, part throttle driving was perfect. When hitting WOT rpms, not until about 5K would a massive backfire ensue, the motor shutoff completely. Lotsa backfires. No codes either, but a CPS swap chased away all that bullshit
