HELP with 98....
Yes HP Tuners require a lap top and knowledge. I also have a 98 and decided not to by HP Tuners. I just have no time and passion for learning how to tune.
I called Superchips Custom Tuning (not to be confused with Superchips). They claim to have units for GM in the fall. I was told late September early October. That's not too far off.
Thanks JA
However, based the lastest post from Blacky at EFI Live, I think EFI is real close on the 98's.
As for the two handhelds (SCT and Vinci) it appears the SCT has more tuning parameters than does the Vinci (Crane).
But all three so far are vaporware (all promising next month since January 2005).
You can possibly get by without a laptop with EFIlive if you can get your car close enough to a workstation. Since it has a USB cable, a 4 foot USB cable connecting the workstation should get you into the car to connect to the PCM interface.
EFILive has a data logger, so there's no need to carry a laptop in the car with scanning software while logging. Once you are done logging, you can view the results either from a laptop or a workstation by downloading from the datalogger to the laptop.
You can get some pretty good laptops now for about $400, some new, some used. With EFI Flashscan, serial is out, and USB is in, so no need to look for a laptop with a serial port or purchase an PCMCI/USB serial adaptor if your laptop doesn't have a serial port.
I have LSEdit and EFI live and have been patiently waiting for EFILive since Jan.
A download with LSEdit takes 25 minutes. With EFI live it will take less than 3-4 minutes if that.
Wait for EFI live if you go with a full blown tuner/scanner package (unlimited license for 98's + four for other vehiciles) and no annual upgrades either like its competitors.
HP is good too.
Don't even consider LSEdit unless someone pays you take it off of their hands or insists on giving it to for you for free (joke). Even if you get it free it will cost you to get it licensed for your pcm.

I do know that once the SCT stuff is available, the 1998 cars should not be months behind like every other company has been so far.
