HF - OBD2 code reader - no signal

HF - OBD2 code reader - no signal So I bought a simple OBD2 code reader from Harbor Freight for $45. It works great, can be stored in the car, and also clears codes. It is much easier than hooking in a PC with diagnostic software.
...anyway this works fine in my GM F-body. Unfortunately, it does not seem to work in my BMW - also a standard OBD-2 car. My PC works with my BMW ...so I know it is not the PCM port.
Has anyone had a simliar experience with code readers on non-GM OBD2 equiped cars?
