Default tuning question

I know most recommend tuning in SD then reconnecting MAF and rescaing MAF tables, but what will it hurt just tuning VE going by LTFT alone ? I mean without SD and having to mess with the MAF tables, just tuning by LTFT and leaving everyting else alone. Thanx

Often, you have L-Trim fluctuations because your MAF is not matched perfectly to your VE tables. In SD mode, you turn off the MAF so you can concentrate on getting your L-Trims back to 0%. Problem occurs once you plug the MAF back in. Your MAF will still be operating off the old values and not re-scaled to agree with the revised VE tables. This conflict will throw your L-Trims back to the direction of the original MAF scale. All your work will be for nothing.

but any discrepancies can be fudged tuning the VE table, end result being the same why would using SD/MAF rescale be better than just tuning VE alone with everythig else as is ? thanx for your input by the way

Done properly(SD/MAF rescale), both the VE table and the Maf table are accurate and reflect the true state of the motor. The PCM relies on both being correct through the various modes of operation. If you just tweak VE with everything turned on, you won't know whether the error comes from the VE table being incorrect, or the MAF table being off. You will end up chasing your tail as the PCM goes between the two for fueling information trying it's best to learn the correct trim.

It's all about getting the correct amount of fuel metered into the cylinder.
Injector flow rates, MAF flow rates, MAP sensors all have a little bit of error. So by doing SD tuning (O2's ensure correct AFR's) and then rescaling the MAF you maintain the correct AFR's (and therefore fuel metering) which is the name of the game...

If you do SD tuning and then go back and change your VE your AFR's will be out...
