Tach Signal

I need to know if most vehicles have a pulse output from the tach or is it a varying voltage.

If it is a pulse signal, by this I mean a square wave, then I need to know if it varies in amplitude, or frequency based on the RPM of the vehicle.

If it is voltage then I need to know the max. and min. voltage.

Edit: Based on EFI engines like the LSX, and then a Distributor engine...
