why MAFT and PCM tuning?

Default why MAFT and PCM tuning?

I finally rounded up all my parts for install and a local shop here is asking $800 for tuning. Apparently the MAFT is what actually does most of the work and the PCM simply needs to be rid of certain trouble codes? (i.e. misfire) So why would it be so expensive? I checked w/Fast Chip/Ed Wright, and less shipping, they wanted $375 and no MAFT is required but the PCM will be locked. That's a hell of a difference! My heads are S2 and the cam is 224/112lsa. If I factor the shops dyno fee, 3 runs otherwise would be $100. Does it take more than 3 runs to dyno tune? MAFT prices at $175 and at the most I was expecting to pay is $500. Is that figure naive? It's an expensive hobby and I am prepared to shell out the bones--I just want alittle more info. Thanks.

Just $.02 from a from a dummy who bought a MAFT. As soon as I opened the box and saw "Horsepower In A Box" printed on the MAFT I should have had enough sense to return it. My LTFT's were slightly below 0 and the O2's at approx .93&.94 so I thought I might lean WOT out a little. Several days of futzing with the settings and AutoTapping have produced nothing but chaos. Matter of fact, even with BASE & WOT both at 0, my LTFT's are way off from what they were without the MAFT hooked up. My uninformed guess is that from 1998-2002 there are differences in the MAFs and the PCMs and that MAFT tries to be the proverbial jack of all trades but is master of none.

Finally I talked with a guy who has been tuning LT1's and LS1's. Nope, he doesn't use a MAFT when tuning on the dyno. Actually, he said it's junk. He said to buy LS1 Edit, bring it in and for $125/hour dyno time (maybe three hours) he'd tune the car. No thanks, I'll leave it as it is.

Mail order tuning can you get close, but it is not as accurate as a good dyno tune.

LS1Edit is a very nice tool to have if you want to tune yourself.

BTW, you could easily use more than 3 pulls to dial in your car. To get a real accurate baseline, you may make 2 pulls just to be sure the dyno runs are stable before making your first adjustment.
