Why no SES light?

Why no SES light? I started my car after an install, and there was no SES, good thing. I soon realized it sounded like i had a cam, so i turned it off, checked a few spark plug wires for being on there, and at least one popped on. I started it again and it sounded better, but i couldn't tell if it sounds like all 8 firing. Shouldn't i be getting the SES thrown if a cylinder isn't firing? I can't really test drive it as i have a vacuum problem, so i wouldn't be sure if it was the lack of a cylinder firing. How can i tell if all 8 are going without A-tap? And why am i/did i not get the SES when i KNOW not all were firing.
Re: Why no SES light? SES lights don't come on instantly, they typically have to perform a cycle test for a set duration of time before the PCM can determine if there is a failure. If you killed it quickly, it probably didn't have time to register.
Also, some SES codes are stored but do not show up as an SES light. Only AutoTap or a Tech II will see them sometimes.
Could it have been an air leak behind the maf? That will make it idle poorly also. EGR gaskets are typically the culprit on 98-00 cars, not sure what year yours is.
