Default Two-Step Wiring on a 1998 M6

Has anyone done this yet and can you provide details?

I was waiting for Matt to post, but I haven't seen anything and I would like to know how to wire this thing up.

Thanks,

Scott

im waiting on mine to get to the door, from what i can gather you just need to use your own clutch switch instead of tapping into the factory one that is on the 99-02's.

i see 2 switches down there (one used to start the car), not sure why they dont count but ill have pics and vids up when i got it str8.

I posted about it in drag racing forum a while back. Here's a cut-paste.

On the '98 I'd assume that you could find a way to use the Cruise Control Clutch Switch with the 2-step (if you have cruise, that is ).

If you use a double pole, single throw switch, and a small relay, you can probably get it to work with the CCCS. The switch would take out the cruise control line and switch it over to a relay control (+12V and a wire going to the noid of the relay). Then through the relay, through the CCCS, and then to ground. Hook the 2-step up to the normally closed leads of the relay. When the clutch is depressed, the relay will deenergize, and the contacts will close on the relay, thereby making the circuit to ground and cranking up the 2-step. Flip the switch when you want to go back to cruise control enabled.

Here's a cheap and dirty schematic.

This is in reference to the '98 solution.

The momentary (arming) operation would work the same. A momentary pushbutton. This would connect to the white wire of the 2-step.

The relay diagram that I drew would have the gray wire switched to ground through the relay. The white wire would work as normal.

So, you're only grounding one wire through the relay.

sounds very doable as well, but why bother with the relay? just +12 on one side of the switch and the out to the 2step on the other, can the switches not handle the small on signal the 2 step needs to see?

i will have to see if there is room for another switch down there..if cccs is one of the switches, what is the other one i see?

There's the CCCS switch, and a clutch starter switch under there (have to push the clutch in to engage the starter). I figured that I'd leave the starter switch alone. Can't remember the last time I used cruise control (even tho the car is my daily driver right now ).

The switches can handle the current (it'd be minimal), but the way I understand the operation is that you want some sort of transition to 'deactivate' the 2-step. That's what the relay does. The relay will activate / deactivate every time you push in the clutch, but the 2-step only arms off of the other wire when you have the clutch pushed in simultaneously. If you have no relay, the CCCS switch is normally open when you have the clutch pedal pushed in, so it's really of no use in that situation. You can use an external switch, but then you have to throw it when you're going down the track.

I don't know if this makes sense but this is really the best way I see to use the clutch pedal and the 2-step. I'll be going (unique) A4 next month anyway so I'll just launch off the transbrake .
