First off there is no such thing as a "CHIP" for these cars. GM did away with the removable chip in V8 F-bodies after the 1993 model year.
So what you are looking at is some kind of programmer. This can range from a used Hypertech (~$200), up to custom tuning ($450-$1000+). LS1_Edit and the Diablo tuner (if available) fall towards the upper range ($500-$550 or so).
IMHO, with your car being quite stock, I would do NOTHING. The factory PCM is pretty darn good. I do NOT believe these "results" saying that people got 20-25 rwhp on reprogramming. Yes, it may happen on the dyno (anything can happen on a dyno ), but what happens when they hit the track? Nada.
Save your money for mods, and save the programming for later. I would only recommend programming after getting gears, or after a cam swap (or more ).

Re: What type of chip? Where to get it?
I almost agree with that , but it depends on what type of performance gains you are looking for. I personally would recommend getting an aftermarket airlid as a first mod and as for programming, the HPP3 is a great tool. I have an 01 also and I gained a solid 1.5 tenths with it. I think the biggest gains came from lowering the fan settings and installing the power tuning. I did raise the shift points and increased the firmness on the shifts which felt better on the street. The Power tuning actually added timing and leaned my O2s out to get the improved ETs. I do understand that not everyone gets these results , but I was quite pleased myself. On the other hand, now that I have added the ST3500 and other performance mods, the custom tuning became the more realistic approach, which eliminated the need for the HPP3. That's my .02. I do have mine for sale if interested, but I would recommend talking to some locals that are using the HPP3 and possibly have one of them uninstall theirs and allow you to try one out from an 01 to see if it's what you're looking for. There are too many people using them to say it's not a good mod.IMHO. Good luck.
