Default LS1 pinging

I have a 2002 trans am and when I install Hypertech tuning my engine will ping on heavy throttle. Why? Does anybody have a solution other then removing the Hypertech tuning?

thanks

I don't, even though I have never tried it. HPP3's are great for gear changes, fan changes, shift points, rev limiter...But the power tuning in most cases causes nothing but trouble!

Sorry to hear that . . . my HPP3 power tuning works great! Two motors can be built identically and yet be quite different! And this is especially true for the LS1s!

You car is pinging like a POS because the power tuning shifts your entire timing table up. I believe HPP3 does it 3 deg.

There are a couple solutions to this.

1) Run Better Gas
2) Run a head cleaner and ensure that you don't have carbon build-up which will cause the engine not to take well to timing.
3) Ensure that your PCV system is not sucking in oil.... This will cause your car not to take well to timing advances as well.

and.....

4) If your car is only pinging during part throttle just drive it around. Your Knock sensors will adjust your timing accordingly. The only problem is that if you have ever disconnected the battery, or reset the PCM, the process has to start all over. If you are pinging during WOT, then you will have to result to the above 3 solutions or not run the power programming.

Good Luck,

...in addition to the other comments you could also try running a colder thermostat ....this since excessive heat causes detonation (pinging)

....I would be very careful to not run with dedonation too long as it can really do serious damage quickly...

Thanks for all the input about my pinging problem. I called HyperTech and the tech there told me not to use my Granatelli MAF. It causes the computer to not send enough gas at open OT. That my factory one would work alot better and not have any detonation. I switched back to the factory one and the pinging is gone and I have more power at OT now. I guess I will have to settle for this setup for awhile. I sure don't want to void my warranty by making internal mods.

thanks

The Stock MAF (descreened or not) will provide ample air flow for any stock cubed LS1 and the PCM will respond more efficiently to tuning changes. I would definitely use the lower fan temp settings (preferably 180 deg), install stock MAF and allow 50 miles of learn time and after making sure you have high octane (premium 93 octane gas) in the car try installing the HPP3 power tuning. I gained a full consistant 1/10th in the 1/4 mile with the HPP3 power tuning on my 01 SS, but like mentioned above, every car is different. Good luck.

Alot more people have problems with HPP3 tuning than people who don't. Consider yourself one of the majority
