Hey guys i guess i'm about to buy a laptop for ls1-edit and atap but i guess is the rs-232 port just a nine pin port or is there anything special about it. Just need to know what to look for when getting a laptop.

there is nothing special about the port... just make sure the laptop has one... and you should be set. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

When I went looking for a laptop a couple weeks ago, most new ones didn't have a serial port, just a USB port, which requires a USB to serial adapter. Best Buy checked and did find some with a serial port, but they were in the $2000 range. Check your local newspaper for an older one and call to make sure it has a serial port.

The usb to serial port adapters work fine. Just dont buy a cheap belkin one. B&B electronic (autotap) sells one (overpriced) and also keyspan (www.keyspan.com). I run a keyspan four port serial to usb hub. That way I can log data from the pcm, have ls1-edit hooked up, log 8 egts. So there is no need to buy a used or low cost laptop if you dont want to.
