The Autotap software is pretty compact and has run fine on any notebook I have tried. The Autotap software can be downloaded from their site
http://www.autotap.com if you want to see what it is like. I have both the Dos and Windows versions but use the DOS version out of habit. The Autotap hardware consists of two cables and an interface box. One cable plugs into your OBD-II port and runs to the box. The other cable runs from the box to the serial port on your computer, so you need a serial port on your notebook. The box and cables are what Autotap is selling. The software is free, and useless without the box.
You can read codes, any input or output values from the car's computer, log data and play it back later or load into a spreadsheet.
I use my work notebook as well as the home notebook with Autotap all the time. Having the program installed on your computer will not adversely affect it for any other use at all.
Make sure you have a good battery for your computer so that you don't run low at the drag strip or while out testing the car. Also, most screens are hard to read during the day, so I do most of my Autotap playing at night.
