Default HPP3 Experts help !

I have a 98 Trans Am -- I am expecting my HPP3 in the mail the next few days to reprogram my computer for my new 3.73 gears.

I was wondering -- since I have it -- what should I tune with it. My mods are minimum. Whisper Ram Air, Lid, exhuast cutout, 3.73.

Its shifting at 4500 now -- what shiftpoints?

Car is Automatic 4spd.

thanks.

your bolton mods are probably just at the point where HHP3 power tuning will hurt you vice help you. as far as shift points go, everyone is different (i know that helps a lot . . . sorry). i had mine at +4 +4 +1 before the PI3200 w/ 3.42's. the 3-4 shift isn't going to gain you too much. it's the 1-2 and 2-3 that have the most impact. it's really trial and error to find what you need. ideally, you want to shift 100-150 (i'm pretty sure) RPM's above peak. i could be wrong about that number. i'll bet you some of the more experienced tech guru's can help out. you can stiffen up your shifting too, however this is done electronically, and when you're WOT, your PCM sets the firmness of the line pressure to max anyway. the coolant temp, rev limiter, tire size, and gear ratio are extremely helpful, as you know. 3.73's will be fun. oh yeah, when you program, it'll automatically clear the SES light if you're throwing a code and you don't have ATAP. hope that helps. sorry so long. posted the same thing myself some time ago.

I have the same shift problem with my car as you do. I was told that there is a speed sensor on the axle. Since you have changed the gear, the computer thinks that the car is moving faster than it really is. The programmer will not fix that unfortunatly. Your best bet is to shift manually when you are running hard. if you haven't done them, do the free mods. My car currently runs a best of 13.1 at 107 traction limited so you should be a bit better. I had to bring down my 2-3 shift point because the tranny didn't want to shift at the top of 2nd. Also raise your rev limiter to 6500 or 6600. I think that is it

The shift points are based on MPH. Correct the speedometer w/the Hypertech and make some runs and see when the shifts happen (should be pretty close to what they were stock). Then adjust shift points and rev limiter as desired. For stock internal cars anything over 6200 is overkill IMO.

PS: Shifting manually is unecessary and may shorten tranny life. Just get the shift points right and let the computer do the shifting.

This is 2003. Why would anyone buy HPPIII these days? Havn't you heard of LS1Edit or Predator, etc.? HPPIII is stone age science compared to the new stuff and it's way overpriced compared to Edit for what is does. I bought one 4 years ago when it was the new kid on the block, but by now it's past its' prime.

eallanboggs: Predator not available for '98 LS-1 cars, & maybe LS-1 edit a bit complicated for him, as it is for many out there....Best wishes. WJ.
