Should I get the standard Atap or the enhanced version?
Steve
I have and always will use the old DOS autotap. It has given me the fewest problems, fastest speed, and simplicity.
If you have the new windows version though, you can't run it.
Good Luck,
Kevin

This type of question gets asked regularly, hope this info helps to clear it up.
The AutoTap product consists of hardware and software.
Hardware
=====================================
There are two types of hardware:
- Version 1 interface cable which was shipped with the old AutoTap V1 product - it is no longer sold.
- Version 2 interface cable which is shipping with the new AutoTap V2 product - this interface is up to 30% faster than the V1 interface.
The V1 interface was capable of processing up to 25 messages per second, the V2 interface can process up to 40 messages per second.
AutoTap for Windows V1 software will only work with V1 hardware.
AutoTap for Windows V2 software will work with both V1 and V2 hardware.
EFILiveV5 for Windows, standard will work with both V1 and V2 hardware.
EFILiveV5 for Windows, professional will only work with V2 hardware.
The hardware (both V1 and V2) consists of three components:
1. A cable that connects the AutoTap interface to the vehicle.
2. The AutoTap interface.
3. A cable that connects the AutoTap interface to your PC's RS232 serial port.
(Some laptops which only have a USB connector will also need a USB to RS232 serial converter).
The AutoTap hardware is product coded as follows:
AT1 = GM.
AT2 = Ford.
AT3 = Chrysler.
AT123 = GM, Ford and Chrysler.
B&B Electronics also offer a vehicle interface adapter (VIA) called LDV, the product codes are:
LDV100P1 = GM
LDV200P1 = Ford
LDV300P1 = Chrysler
LDV123P1 = GM, Ford and Chrysler
Plus many other heavy-duty vehicle interfaces.
Although these interfaces are very similar to the AutoTap interface, they will not work with the AutoTap software nor the EFILiveV5 software. They are intended primarily for OEMs (Other Equipment Manufacturers) that design and build their own scan-tool products.
Software
=====================================
When you purchase AutoTap, you need to decide which software configuration you will require.
The following is a list of software configurations and some of the differences between them:
1. AutoTap for Windows, generic parameters. There are about 25-30 generic parameters which are provided by all OBD-II compliant vehicle manufacturers, they are listed at the end of this post.
2. AutoTap for Windows, enhanced parmaters. These parameters are specific to each manufacturer. There are usually 100-200 enhanced parameters. A few of the more common ones are listed at the end of this post.
3. EFILiveV5 for Windows, Standard. The std version of EFILiveV5 provides enhanced parameters and high-speed data logging. It is designed to work only with GM's LS1 powertrain.
4. EFILiveV5 for Windows, Professional. The pro version of EFILiveV5 provides enhanced parameters, high-speed data logging and bi-directional controls. Bi-directional controls give you the ability to temporarily override the PCM to alter parameters such as: Idle speed, IAC, Spark advance, Commanded Air Fuel Ratio and many more. It is designed to work only with GM's LS1 powertrain.
5. AutoTap for Palm - this requires a special Palm cable in addition to the AutoTap interface cable.
Each of these software packages is available to download free of charge via the internet.
They are available so that existing customers can have free, instant access to upgrades and new features.
To use a particular software configuraton you must purchase the appropriate software registration code. The software registration works like a key which is encoded uniquely for each interface cable. It allows the interface that you purchase to be used with the software package(s) for which you have a registration code.
The following examples are for GM versions of AutoTap only
==========================================
For example, you could purchase "AutoTap for Windows Generic" for $199.95 and you would recieve an interface cable, a CD containg ALL software packages and a registration code that will allow you to use only the "AutoTap for Windows Generic" software package with your interface cable.
Or you could purchase "AutoTap for Windows Enhanced" for $289.95. You would receive EXACTLY the same interface and CD. However your registration code would be different and would allow you to use the "AutoTap for Windows Enhanced" software package.
Or you could purchase "EFILiveV5 for Windows, Standard" for $304.95. You would receive EXACTLY the same interface and CD. However your registration code would be different and would allow you to use the "EFILiveV5 for Windows, Standard" software package.
Once you have purchased a product that includes the interface cable you can purchase additional software registration codes as "add-ons" that will allow you to use other software configurations with your interface.
For example, if you purchased the "AutoTap for Windows Generic" for $199.95, you could "add-on" "EFILiveV5 for Windows, Standard" for only $144.95 extra. You would receive EXACTLY the same interface and CD. However you would receive two registration codes, one for "AutoTap for Windows Generic" and one for "EFILiveV5 for Windows Standard".
