Idle Issues
Idle Issues Hey guys I'm new to LS1Edit and I was looking for some tips about perfecting my idle. I have a TR224 and I want to hear the lope, so I set my idle to a reasonable 750 RPM. I kept the low-temp idle values stock. I also adjusted the idle air screw out a little to allow more air to pass.
The problem with this is that when I first start it up, hot or cold, it wants to die and I have to hit the throttle a bit to keep it alive. It also dies when coming to a stop or reversing, unless I give it a solid 5 minutes to warm up. After warm up it's fine. It also surges pretty badly.
What else can I do to help this? I would like to avoid raising the idle because I want to hear that lope <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" /> I have heard some people mentioning to add timing, but at the same time I heard that surging is an indication of too much timing.

I adjusted the idle screw so that the lowest the IAC's ever get is about 8. They will never dip below that (idling anyway).
Nope, no hole drilled. I figured that adjusting the idle screw had the same effect as drilling a hole.

Re: Idle Issues 8 is pretty low. I wouldn't really want them lower than 30. Too low an IAC count can mess with the idle as well.
I have found more luck in drilling the TB hole than adjusting the screw. I would guess that with a cam like that, you'd probably need the TB hole to be at least 7/32".
I have a 221/221 114lsa cam and my TB hole is at 13/64 and my idle is at 800rpm which brings my IACs to about 45-50 in park at warm idle. That is still a little too high and I get some minor surging and warm starting issues like that, so I'm going to start a second small hole and work to get the IACs in the 30-35 range.
IMO, 8 is too low, and I've never found as much luck in getting the idle good by messing with set screws as by drilling the TB hole bigger. Just my experiance <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" /> A combo of doing both should work well though.
